50th Reunion

The 50th Reunion was held at the Curlewis Golf Club on the Bellarine Peninsula, the official program running over Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th November, 2024.
Prior to this, Peter Lucas organised a number of golfing tragics, male and female, who enjoyed an early start to proceedings with 9 holes on the Thursday followed by 18 holes on the Friday.
The non-golfers checked in on the Saturday morning in time for an informal BBQ buffet lunch, followed by the Saturday afternoon “Scientific Program”:

  • John Salmon gave us a glimpse into “Aboriginal Scar and Birthing Trees”, something many of us had never heard of.
  • Jim Mullany showed a historic surgical movie on varicose veins, and an old rumour was resurrected: that if you strung all the varicose veins end to end that his father had stripped out, that the length of this string of veins would go several times around the globe.
  • John Mackenzie spoke of the good, bad and ugly aspects of computer technology, and gave a living demonstration of the ugly side, where anything that could go wrong did go wrong. An 8 minute video on the topic can be viewed here.
  • Finally, Richard Gilhome gave an eclectic talk about what he’s been doing in retirement, even though he’s one of the few who’s still working !

On Saturday evening, the gala dinner was held at the Jack Rabbit winery restaurant. This was an excellent venue with brilliant ambience, food and wines.
After entree, Jane Fyfield gave an engrossing presentation on the results of the survey, which will be summarised in the Reunion magazine.
Then after our main course, Jim Mullany gave the Chairman’s oration, which concluded with his standing down as President, and very smoothly handing the baton (AKA the poisoned chalice) to Peter Dwyer who was elected unopposed.

Hearty applause acknowledged the superb governance provided by Jim and his committee since 2009.
Brunch on Sunday morning concluded the reunion, which was a resounding success.
